Word Detective #1 - Sounds like Fun app for iPhone and iPad

Sounds like Fun is the first and most important step of the acclaimed Word Detective series. A pre-phonics App, it encourages children from 2 years of age to recognize the 40+ individual sounds (phonemes) of English. These are the building blocks of words and later the keys on which the rules of English are based for successful spelling. Understanding good understanding of the different sounds and their rules regarding their use has been seen to accelerate literacy learning in children of all ages and all abilities but never has this acceleration been more apparent than at the very beginning.


Sounds like Fun does not associate letters with sounds, the way most other phonics programs do. This is deliberate, to avoid the confusion caused by linking one sound to one letter. For example, most phonics programs teach A, /a/, apple; B, /b/, ball; C, /k/, cat; but what about the A in apron, was, about, water? The letter A in these words does not sound like /a/ as in apple. Similarly children might learn S, /s/, snake; but what about the sounds of the S in sugar or his? Children need to be able to recognize the sounds of English BEFORE they are taught how to write them down in different ways, and how to pronounce letters in different ways
